Engaging the Exercises – A talk for Mission Formation Officers by Amy McKenna

Share

Each month the members of Promoting the Spiritual Exercises Discussion Group meet together for collaboration and support in the very important work of not only directing people in the Exercises but also helping others discern a call to engage in the Exercises. They begin each meeting by hearing a short presentation tailored to spiritual direction and the Exercises and then engage in a discussion about the ideas presented.

Last year, the November presenter was Amy McKenna. Amy McKenna is the Director of the Spirituality Program for Adults at St. Ignatius Cleveland. Amy shared her experiences on “Promoting the Spiritual Exercises to Faculty and Staff.” She provided a thoughtful reflection on what it means to “promote” the Spiritual Exercises in an invitational and relational way. Her presentation spurred some great conversation on how we can invite others to listen to God’s call to participation in the Exercises when they are prepared to do so.

We invite you to view Amy’s presentation below and then consider the following:

  • If you are a Director or Promoter of the Exercises in your school: Does what she mentions resonate with you? How does it equate to your own experiences of inviting people to spiritual direction and the Exercises?
  • If you are someone considering the Exercises: How might God be inviting you to deepen your relationship? Who in your school can help you in your discernment?
